Boron carbide is an inorganic substance, usually a gray black micro powder. It is one of the three hardest known materials (second only to diamond and cubic boron nitride), used in tank armor, bulletproof vests, and many industrial applications. Its Mohs hardness is about 9.5.
It was discovered as a byproduct of metal borides research in the 19th century and was not scientifically studied until the 1930s.
Boron carbide can absorb a large number of neutrons without forming any radioactive isotopes, making it an ideal neutron absorber in nuclear power plants, which mainly controls the rate of nuclear fission. Boron carbide is mainly made into controllable rod-shaped materials in nuclear reaction furnaces, but sometimes it is turned into powder due to the need to increase surface area.
Due to its low density, high strength, high temperature stability, and good chemical stability.
