Cobalt can increase the solidus temperature of steel and improve the quenching stability of austenite. Cobalt is an important component of tungsten containing tool steel because it can provide the necessary thermal hardness and improve high-temperature cutting efficiency.
The production of cobalt iron is mainly carried out in a submerged Arc Furnace, with the raw materials being sulfur copper cobalt ore or pyrite concentrate.
Taking sulfur copper cobalt ore as an example. During smelting, cobalt ore, lime, and coke are first added to the DC submerged arc furnace , followed by a reduction reaction to obtain two types of alloys. One is white alloy, and the other is red and gold. White and gold can be separated by wet method to obtain cobalt compounds, which can then be refined through other refining processes to obtain metallic cobalt. Red alloy can be directly refined to obtain copper, and the remaining cobalt rich slag can be returned to the DC submerged arc furnace for further smelting.

Facing this situation, the double electrode DC furnace can start arc smelting again by adding arc striking materials such as coke at the bottom of the electrode.
