Tungsten iron is mainly used in the steelmaking industry as an alloy additive for tungsten elements.
Tungsten can combine with other elements in steel to form complex carbides, which can refine the grain size of the steel, improve its red hardness, wear resistance, and impact strength.
The production of ferrotungsten requires the use of a DC submerged Arc Furnace, usually using the block method or iron extraction method.
If the block method is used to produce tungsten iron, tungsten concentrate, asphalt coke, ferrosilicon, fluorite, and magnesium sand need to be added to the DC submerged arc furnace for smelting. Asphalt coke and ferrosilicon are reducing agents, while fluorite and magnesia are slag making agents. For the convenience of removing alloy blocks, the furnace body adopts a detachable furnace shell, and the furnace body can be pulled out from under the electrode. In order to release slag during the smelting process, the furnace body also needs to be able to tilt. The smelting process is intermittent, usually lasting 4 to 5 days per furnace, during which slag is discharged 20 to 25 times. After the smelting is completed, the furnace can be stopped for cooling, the furnace body can be pulled out, the furnace shell can be disassembled, and the alloy block can be taken out.
The iron extraction method is similar to the block method, but the difference is that when a well melted semi molten tungsten iron appears, special spoons and machinery are needed to excavate the tungsten iron from the furnace. This method can produce continuously without stopping the furnace, and the quality of the smelted alloy is good. This method has gradually replaced the block method.

7.When an accident occurs in the smelting process and a power failure occurs for a period of time, an insulating hard shell will be formed on the surface of the molten liquid.
Facing this situation, the double electrode DC furnace can start arc smelting again by adding arc striking materials such as coke at the bottom of the electrode.
