The smelting of manganese rich slag is based on the principle of selective reduction, which is carried out according to the different reducibility of manganese, iron, and phosphorus oxides in manganese ore. Manganese ore is smelted in the presence of insufficient reducing agents. While iron and phosphorus are fully reduced, manganese is maximally retained in the slag, thereby obtaining low iron and low phosphorus rich manganese slag.
Rich manganese slag is mainly used as a raw material for producing low phosphorus, low iron, low carbon silicon manganese alloys and metallic manganese. Blast furnace rich manganese slag is mainly used in the production of silicon manganese alloys with less strict requirements for iron and phosphorus content. Almost all low phosphorus, low iron, high-quality manganese rich slag used for smelting metallic manganese is produced by electric furnaces.
The smelting of manganese rich slag in the DC Submerged Arc Furnaces generally adopts small and medium-sized tilting DC Submerged Arc Furnaces. The DC submerged Arc Furnace adopts intermittent operation, while the submerged arc furnace adopts continuous operation.
